Welcome to Sutherland

Nestled in quiet Sutherland, Home Away From Home offers you the perfect Karoo getaway: a real Platteland experience of a small South African dorp (town) complete with a generous garden, a farm dam for swimming, a small orchard of fruit trees and a heritage rose garden.

With comfortable big rooms, this home is perfect for families and friends to gather for holidays or special occasions in every season.

LOCAL IS LEKKER

About Sutherland

Sutherland was founded in 1855 as a church and market town serving local sheep farmers. It developed on the farm De List and was named after Reverend Henry Sutherland who travelled annually from Worcester to the Roggeveld to conduct church services.  By 1872, the town had 138 registered residents living in 19 houses. The Dutch Reformed Church in the town centre was built in 1899. During the Anglo Boer War, British troops used the church as a fort. Several clashes between British and Boer forces took place in the town. In one engagement, 250 Boer commandos attacked the British garrison for ten hours. The ruins of a fort remain on a hill outside the town called Rebelskop, named after this event.

Follow a star

Sutherland has some of the clearest skies in South Africa, which is why the town is known for its night skies, telescopes and star tours. The South African Astronomical Observatory is situated a few kilometres outside Sutherland and is home to SALT, the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. The town also has a planetarium and several small private star tours are available.

Sutherland Planetarium: Offers star shows throughout the day. Walk in.
SALT Observatory Tour:  Just 15 minutes drive from town, visit the SAAO and SALT. Phone ahead to book your tour.
Night sky viewing: Enjoy the clear skies and amazing stars at a private observatory on Blesfontein Farm.

Seasons to remember

Sutherland is also well-known for its snow in winter - experience some of the coldest temperatures in South Africa. Less-known are the beautiful flowers in spring time that blanket the surrounding hills and farms in colour.
